Eastern European Harmonies and Vocal Technique with True Life Trio
Come explore the unique harmonies, rhythms, vocal production and ornamentation of traditional women’s vocal music from Eastern Europe. Be prepared to drone, create gorgeous harmonies, and resonate from your head to your toes. This workshop will be led by Leslie Bonnett, Briget Boyle, and Juliana Graffagna, veteran vocalists with Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble and current members of True Life Trio.
1935 Warner Ave.
Santa Fe, NM
True Life Trio weaves sumptuous vocal harmonies and sultry rhythms from Eastern Europe, the Americas & beyond. This innovative trio explores the creative possibilities of cross-fertilization of different traditions with unlikely timbres connecting Bulgaria to the Bayou.
TLT’s improvisation-laced repertoire includes original songs and folk tunes from far-flung lands such as Macedonia, Louisiana, Albania, Ukraine, Poland, Italy and Georgia. Featuring the powerful vocal talents of three dynamic performers whose musical collaboration was forged in Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble, the trio delves deep into a vast array of folk music, massaging and expanding the boundaries of these traditional styles to create its own unique sound.
The result is a sweet, sonic explosion that melts in the listener’s ear. Since its inception in 2010, TLT has enchanted audiences from the San Francisco Bay Area to the Pacific Northwest. Performances include the Berkeley Jewish Music Festival, The California Christmas Revels, the Berkeley World Music Festival and collaborations with Portland’s Aurora Chorus, The Knights of Revery, Edessa, MWE and NYC’s Black Sea Hotel. In 2014, True Life Trio was awarded a grant from the East Bay Community Foundation Fund for Artists to create a performance piece on memory. Inspired by this commissioned work, TLT released its first full-length recording, Like Never & Like Always in 2015.
Like Never & Like Always is a collaboration with instrumentalist Gari Hegedus and sound designer Eric Oberthaler. True Life Trio features Leslie Bonnett (voice, fiddle, percussion), Briget Boyle (voice, guitar, percussion), and Juliana Graffagna (voice, accordion, percussion).
"True Life Trio has created a unique musical journey...each song is a small auditory work of art meant to be intently listened to." - Ginger Murray, SF Weekly
Ghost Note Ensemble was founded in 2012 at Klezcalifornia's Yiddish Culture Festival. Since its inception, Ghost Note has sought to weave the musical threads of the Hungarian, Moldavian, Ukrainian, and Jewish folk traditions into a tuneful time-traveled tapestry, a requiem for borders of future past. A Ghost Note concert is then much like a musical tour through the times and places of our lost worlds, with the ghosts of song coming alive to dance and sing, in the fullest joy and sorrow, once again. Ghost Note Ensemble features Travis Hendrix on bass, Jack Hanley on mandolin, furulya, and poyk, Mattias Kaufmann on button accordion, and Joshua Laurenzi on fidl and furulya.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Advance tickets are available at the link below, or you may purchase your tickets at the door the night of the show. Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash only at the door (ATMs are nearby).

What is a listening party? Lush, cinematic and evocative, Like Never & Like Always was designed as a full-immersion sonic experience best enjoyed in sequence from beginning to end (call us old-fashioned…). At this party, we will gather in the studio and listen to the album in its entirety. (There will be chairs but feel free to bring your own cushion if you want to lounge on the floor). True Life Trio and Gari Hegedus will then round out the evening with some live music.
ABOUT LIKE NEVER & LIKE ALWAYS
This exciting album is the culmination of a live performance and recording project commissioned by the East Bay Community Foundation Fund for Artists. True Life Trio and multi-instrumentalist/composer Gari Hegedus have created a dreamlike soundscape of stunning open-voice harmonies, elemental modal music and vivid poetry from Eastern Europe and the Balkans, and inspired original music. Co-produced by sound designer/composer Eric Oberthaler, this ambitious album is a heartful and intriguing musical odyssey that traces a life journey in reverse, touching on universal themes of childhood, marriage, migration, war and death.
